LAMBORGHINI Urraco P300 (1978)

LAMBORGHINI

URRACO P300 - 1978

One of only 205 ever built

Matching number engine, & matching colours, European origin

Excellent example, 98 % complete and ready for a nice restoration

The "true" Urraco following Stanzani intention: DOHC, 265 HP, 7800 rpm, 1100 kg

Much rarer than the P250, also more reliable and faster

The rare and sought-after Urraco P300

Présented in 1974, the Urraco P300, whilst retaining the modern structure of the P250 - central and transversal engine "à la Miura", integrated bodysheel - was technically in another league : the all-alloy V8 capacity was increased to 3-litre and received a completely new DOHC head, with chain-driven cam, much more reliable than the P250 belts. With 265 HP @7800 rpm, versus merely 220 HP  for the P250, this 90HP/litre V8 it is close to a racing engine. Actually, based on confidences that we received by a well-respected former Lamborghini importer, this engine could even reach 9000 rpm, and was designed with a "hidden agenda" : to set the foundation of a 3-litre block that could possibly de developped for Formula 1.

One can say that Lamborghini Chief-Engineer Paolo Stanzani, who created the Countach, Espada, Marzal and Bugatti EB110, made the P300 the "real Urraco". The Bertone design was perfect on the P250, but limited power and reliability issues were a bit of a disappointment for the afficionados. On the contrary, the P300 is a high-performance sports car, with a DOHC V8 which is a pure joy to use and abuse. The production was very limited, mainly due to the fact that this high-power engine was not homologated in the USA.

The Bertone design is an absolute success, today, 40 years after, this timeless shape is still admirable.

The Urraco P300 is technically superior to its 70s competitors: 245 km/h, and zero to 100 km/h in 5,5 seconds. It's an authentic Classic Lamborghini, admittedly less expensive than the Miura and Countach, but with the same thoroughbred character - and much rarer. Since the Sant'Agata firm essentielly built 12-cylindre cars, this V8 berlinetta remains an extremely exclusive Italian GT of the Golden Age.

The car for sale

Our Urraco P300 is a very special example, since it has been kept in a garage for over twenty years. Delivered in Roma by the Lamborghini Factory to the local dealer in Novembre 1978, this fine automobile retains its matching engine, as well as its orignal colour scheme, a very beautiful silver grey over black leather upholstery.

This is a very attractive car for the collector who would like to initially invest a limited budget, and then undertake a retsoration following his own timing and funding. The car is almost 100 % complete and very authentic in all its parts. In addition, the interior upholstery has fortunatley been preserved in good condition, with the characteristic patina of the thoroughbreds that have retained the flavour of this enchanted Era of the sixties and seventies...

Inside the front boot, all components are original and generally in a good condition

This picture of the engine sub-chassis shows the preserved condition of the structure

Based on our examination of the car, the restoration tasks to be done are essentially the following :

-  The engine has been taken off and dismantled : a cylinder having been damaged, a combustion chamber is to be re-machined, and a piston to be replaced. Of course, while the engine is open, also a complete checking and renewing of other components should be done.

- The bodywork is complete and generally in good condition, except in three areas where objects fell on it (not accidents): roof, left rear fender and front rear fender. All elements are all present: windows, handles, wipers, bumpers, lights (working). The windshield needs to be replaced - there is a damage on the right side, which is not very visible on the pictures.

- As it happened often on this model, rust is visible in three areas : sills, bagage boot and lower front. Restoring these elements, which are made of steel, is a very common restoration task.

- Errors excepted, very few parts are missing : the Weber 40 mm carburetors, and the ignition distributor.

Among the Classic Lamborghinis the Urraco P300 is one of the most sought-after, very rarely seen on the market, and offering all the best qualities of a true Italian GT Italienne, so exciting to drive and so beautiful to admire : a very exclusive and fine automobile that a Collector will keep for a long time.
