La documentation Mardikian Engineering présente, aux côtés de la Countach LP400 transformée en Spider pour Rod Stewart,
une étonnante Ferrari BB Targa (notez les montants de pare-brise renforcés). Seule la Countach a été retrouvée à ce jour.
Un Importateur pour les "Happy Few"
Albert Mardikian, ingénieur et homme d'affaires Californien, s'est fait connaître pour avoir importé et "légalisé" avant tout le monde et pour de riches clients américains, la crème des Européennes haut de gamme. A son palmarès : Ferrari BB, Rolls-Royce Corniche et Camargue Porsche 930 Turbo, BMW M1. L'activité de son entreprise Trend Imports était focalisée sur l'importation et le commercial, tandis que Mardikian Engineering se faisait fort de faire homologuer toutes les super cars Européennes aux normes des Etats-Unis.
L'atelier-laboratoire de Mardikian Engineering situé à Newport Beach, Californie (photo ci-dessous) faisait non-seulement "passer" les normes de pollution DOT et EPA aux modèles les plus rares, mais il obtenait également des améliorations de performances substantielles.
Ainsi, la Porsche 930 Turbo traitée par Mardikian développait plus de puissance que les versions Européennes, tout en étant légale aux USA. Cette notion de "fédéralisation" - homologation selon les normes Fédérales de contrôle des émissions - était toutefois sujette à controverse, puisque des difficultés juridiques survinrent, en raison desquelles, d'après nos recherches, la LP400 Spider, sans doute le chef d'oeuvre de Trend Engineering, demeura très probablement une pièce unique.
Les Rolls-Rolls importées par Albert Mardikian pouvaient sur commande
être munies d'un turbocompresseur et de finitions ultra luxueuses.

Ainsi, Albert Mardikian, Ingénieur et brillant innovateur, avait osé réaliser le rêve de quelques Américains qui en avaient les moyens : rouler en sportives européennes très haut de gamme malgré les interdictions et tracasseries fédérales. C'est Mardikian qui inspira directement le personnage de Charlie Babbit dans le film Rain Man de Barry Levinson: le film débute par le débarquement sur le port de New-York de quatre Lamborghini Countach, que Babbit, interprété par Tom Cruise a vendu à de riches clients, bien entendu avant d'avoir obtenu l'homologation des services de la Protection de l'Environnement...
La scène d'ouverture de "Rainman" (réalisateur Barry Levinson): le personnage de Babitt est en réalité Mardikian. Une de ses répliques: "La pollution envahit la planète, et vous allez tout régler en empêchant quatre malheureuses voitures de rouler ?" Il s'agit des quatre Countach qu'il vient de faire débarquer aux Etats-Unis alors qu'elles sont loin d'être homologuées...Exactement l'histoire d'Albert Mardikian.
L'homme avait une ambition certaine, et projeta même, comme les document d''époque le révèlent, de fonder sa propre marque, qui devait porter son nom. Les barrières règlementaires n'auront laissé le temps de naître qu'à quelques rarissimes projets "hors-limite", tels que cette LP400 Spider, qui est heureusement demeurée préservée et constitue aujourd'hui une des plus désirables Lamborghini d'époque Spider, qui se comptent sur les doigts d'une main.

This Mardikian Engineering brochure presents, alongside with Rod Stewart's Countach LP400 Spider,
a fabulous Ferrari 365 GT4/BB Targa. However, only the Countach LP400 Spider seems to have survived.
An importer for the "Happy Few"...
Albert Mardikian was an American Engineer and businessman, well known for his early importation and federalization of the cream of Europan supercars into the USA : Ferrari BB, Rolls-Royce Corniche, Camargue, Porsche 930 Turbo, BMW M1...
Mardikian headed two different Companies: Trend Imports, focussing on importation and sales, and Mardikian Engineering, in charge of federalizing and upgrading all kind of exotic European cars.
The "workshop-laboratory" of Mardikian Engineering (here below) had emission control measurement equipements and Mardikian's engineers were not only capable of making Ferraris and Lamborghinis DOT- and EPA- legal, but also of increasing their performance and comfort. The Porsche 930 Turbo, once upgraded by Mardikian Engineering delivered more power than the European version. Mardikian's "federalization" was very controversial, and eventually led to serious legal litigations, which as a consequence, limited Mardikian's production to a couple of very rare cars. The LP400 Spider, Trend Engineeering's masterwork, remained therefore a very probable unique "one-off"...
The Ferrari 308 GTSi, in its Mardikian version, delivered 230 HP instead of 205 only for the US standard Ferrari version. For any model, Mardikian Engineering could provide their clients with more power, as in addition to very special luxury equipments. This was the exclusive feeling that clients, wealthy VIPs demanded. Mardikian also imported the Mercedes 500 6.9, of course once again the top of the range.
Mardikian used to work with Giacobone Executive Coachcraft as a partner for coachbuilding and bodywork modifications. Nick Giacobone, CEO, then launched another Company specializing in luxury on-commission limousines. Albert Mardikian had managed to make a dream true. The dream of a few wealthy American citizens who could afford to drive top-of-the-range European Sport Cars in spite of the Federal rules. Mardikian was man of ambition of many competencies and talents : through our history research, we learned that he had an even greater project : to build his own car, and to found his own automobile manufacturing Company.
Rolls-Rolls was another Albert Mardikian specialty : upon special
order, a turbo-charger was fitted as well as special luxury equipments
Unfortunatley only a few of his "dream-cars" have seen the light, one of which is this outrageous LP400 Spider, on of the very, very few classic "open" Lamborghinis..
It's actually Albert Mardikian who inspired the character of Charlie Babbit, in the film Rainman by Barry Levinson with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. Tom Cruise plays the CEO of a small US Company importing Italian sports cars from Europe. The firsts scene of the film shows four Countach being downloaded from a boat onto the port of New-York, and then Babbit struggling to make them authroized by the Emission Control Authority...Exactly Al Mardikian's story... !

The four Countach have just been unloaded on the docks of New-York, but are still illegal....word for word, Albert Mardikian's story.
